Petition to: Reduce the number of signatories required on a petition to 500

We the undersigned petition The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead to Reduce the number of signatories required on a petition to 500. More details

More details from petition creator

It feels like the high number of signatures required for a petition to be debated by RBWM Council represents a barrier to democracy in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.

At present, petitions require 1500 signatures to be debated by RBWM Council. The high 1500 limit is often more even than the number of votes a councillor receives to be elected on election day.

Many petitions do not reach this high barrier of required signatures. Feels like democracy is being stifled. Therefore residents time signing is wasted and any petition issue affecting up to 1499 people would not be debated.

Only well organised petition campaigns are able to get enough signatures, this impacts the poorest and smallest areas in the Unitary Authority of RBWM. We need a borough that works for all residents.

Petition Rejected

This petition has been rejected because:

  • It contained wording that needed to be amended, or is impossible to understand

Additional information about this rejection:
The petition has been rejected because it requires re-wording. As currently written, the petition suggests the council will not consider any petition below 1500 signatures, which is incorrect. Rather, more than 1500 signatures will be required for a debate at full council, whilst petitions below this number are dealt with in other ways.
